Green smoothies are becoming more and more popular thanks to the increasing number of celebrities seen grasping one. On the other hand, a bright green smoothie might not appeal to you at all! The psychology of drinking something green goes against our preconceived ideas of what tastes “good” – a green drink tends to get a “EUGH” response from most people, even before giving it a try. If this is you then I challenge you to test your palate, you might surprise yourself with this smoothie recipe!


The main reasons why a green smoothie is considered “healthy” is due to the high levels of fibre, antioxidants and vitamins and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, beta-carotene, vitamin B-complex, vitamin-C, vitamin-A, and vitamin K found in green/yellow fruits and vegetables.


The addition of “extras” such as spirulina are also common, this blue-green algae provides a vegan source of protein (pure forms are around 60% protein), as well as vitamin B12, iron and omega 3 fatty acids. However, it must be understood that the form of Vitamin B12 present in spirulina is a biologically inactive form for humans and so can’t be counted towards your daily intake.



Ingredients (serves 1)

  • 1 green apple

  • 3 chunks cucumber

  • 1tsp cinnamon

  • 200ml coconut milk

  • 5-6 spinach leaves

  • 1 tsp spirulina

  • 3-4 cubes of ice


Method

  1. Blend all ingredients together, then serve.
